“It” is exactly what the client is looking for.  If Target is looking for a brunette with blue eyes for its next campaign than the “it” factor is exactly what they need.  There maybe 400 brunettes that they consider.  However, one brunette will win them over.  Maybe it is because she appears to be a girl-next door in a non threatening way.  Maybe she has stunning features and they are trying to push a high-end look with their clothes.  As a model or actor you can’t be everything to everyone.  However, you can master what you want to be.  For instance, some actresses go out of their way to show versatility so others can see they range of their art.  Some models who are high fashion cross over into a more commercial look.  Whatever your niche will be, make sure you master it well.  This is where marketing yourself as a performer is essential.

1. Make sure you are comfortable. Choose the right shoes. If you’re not used to walking in heels, start with a thin two-inch heel, preferably one that you have already broken in. (Later, you can work your way up to walking in higher, less comfortable heels.) If the shoes are new, scratch the soles with scissors so that they will not slip when they touch the floor. Alternatively, you can cover the sole of the shoe with masking tape, if you don’t want to scratch your shoes.

   Learn to stand like a supermodel. Practice your posture, throw your shoulders back, and push your pelvis slightly forward. It might create the illusion that you’re leaning back a little, rather than hunching forward.

3. Train yourself to place the ball of the foot down first, and keep all of your weight balanced there rather than on the heel. It may feel strange, but placing the ball of the foot down first gives you more of an elegant stride than a clunky heel-first walk would. It’s almost like walking on your tippy-toes, the way ballerinas do.
4. Put one foot in front of the other (literally). Toes should face forward. Your footprints should form a single line, as if you are walking on a rope or a beam. When done quickly, this gives the body that characteristic swing.
5. Make your stride look long and commanding by lifting your legs almost in the same fashion a horse would. For each stride, you want to lift your foot a good distance off the ground (with a bend in the knee) and then place it down a good distance in front of the supporting leg. Don’t make your strides too large as this will make you look awkward and ungraceful, but make sure you take large enough steps, rather than just baby steps.
6. Look straight forward, capturing the essence of the clothes you’re wearing with the expression on your face. Focus on an object straight ahead of you (but don’t stare at a viewer…that is creepy). Keep your chin up and your head still as your body moves down the runway. When you make your turn at the end, let your head be the last part of your body to move.
7. Fingers naturally curl under when relaxed, but don’t let them! this makes it look like you have NO fingers, especially in pictures. Just let them hang straight down, tense your fingers enough that you can accomplish this.
8. Develop your own signature walk. There’s no simple formula for walking the runway, and what will ultimately make you stand out is not only how well you can move your body but also how much of your own personality you can inject into your performance to make it memorable. The best way to create your own unique style is to experiment, practice, and get feedback (even if it means taking some constructive criticism).

• Watch supermodels walk the walk. Visit fashion shows and watch them on TV. Who were the models that stood out the most? What made them unique? How was her walk different from the others’? Learn from the best so that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
• Watch fashion shows. Most of the girls on the show have the fiercest walk, and it is easier to see since they are wearing lingeries.
• Videotape yourself walking, so you can understand what other people are seeing. Also, by keeping a visual record of your walk, you’ll be able to trace your progress as you learn how to strut your stuff like a real supermodel would.
• If you should trip, fall, or have any other unfortunate circumstance, recover gracefully. Smile, laugh, and keep going as if it never happened. Nothing will demonstrate your confidence like your performance under stressful circumstances.

I know a lot of people want to know runway models average height and weight. 
It is more important to be healthy then to be skinny. Depending on what type of model you want to be can determine the size you need to be.  If you are a young high fashion model, the industry desires small sizes and for the model to be taller than 5ft 8in.  If you are going to be a plus model, you also need to fit into the size of plus models.  I even knew someone who use to use padding so she could fit into plus size clothing so she could work.  The most important thing to remember is that you are hired to present an image and you have to leave all sensitivity at the door.  The client is wanting something specific and to make money in the business you will need to deliver whether that means loosing or gaining weight.  Also keep in mind that you work is not your life, so you need to ultimately be comfortable in your own skin.  Here is a link to a CD I created called 3 Days to Stardom.  If you are interested in getting into the business on the right foot, you will find the information in 3 Days to Stardom very helpful

Remember a while back abercrombie and fitch modelsdidn’t really wear much clothing.  They appealed to the easy “sex sells” way of thinking.  As a model, you have to decide where to draw the line.  Your reputation and body are sacred and you need to decide what image you want to portray.  If you get picture done without clothing coverage then you will book jobs that require you to dress this way.  Pictures will stay around or life.  Just ask numerous celebrities who had compromising pictures of themselves pop up.  It can be embarrassing and difficult so you want to make sure that you only take pictures that make you feel comfortable and that you would want to show to anyone. Abercrombie and fitch modeling standards have gotten them into trouble.  That does not have to happen to you.
